Windows Phone Night Market

Project Description

The Windows Phone Night Market was a five city tour focused on introducing influencers to the new Windows Phone in the late fall of 2011.  The design centered around the concept of a night market and locations were chosen to have an inner city loft/warehouse feel.  Our client, ZedInk, lead a creative approach that used old and found objects to reinforce the Night Market feel.   We then lit the event using practical lighting wherever possible.  We also sought out antique theatrical lighting fixtures to reinforce the idea of a thrown together evening event where all of the various booths were put together with whatever material they could find.
In each city a different indie rock band performed on a stage branded with a large LED.
Through out the space environmental projection was used to create mood and atmosphere.

Sony Metreon

 Project Description

Sony created an entertainment mall in San Francisco.  Designed to be an entertainment destination for a wide age range, the center included attractions, movies, gaming and dining. Overall the project needed to reflect the modern, clean style associated with the Sony brand. Custom work and fixtures integrated into the architectural design gave the project sophistication.

We provided lighting design for several areas within the project. The Gateway comprised the main central spaces including the ticketing area, lobbies, elevators and other common spaces. A multi story atrium with light intrusion the Gateway design needed to be successful under varying ambient lighting conditions. Taste of San Francisco is an upscale food court showcasing local specialities. Airtight Garage was a custom gaming attraction, where the design needed to appeal to a younger, technology heavy crown, and reflect a more themed, fantasy environment.

Harps and Angels

Featuring the music and lyrics of Randy Newman, direction by four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks and an outstanding ensemble cast, this  musical adventure includes a many familiar Newman tunes including "Political Science,"  "I Think  It's Going to Rain Today," "Short People," "Sail Away,"  "Feels Like Home," and of course, "I  Love L.A.".

Brian’s lighting design challenge was to help knit the various Newman songs into narrative threads that emotionally link the songs together. Using the rectilinear nature of the set and projection elements, he created a landscape of rectangular playing areas and motifs to interweave each scene and song.

One moment from “Short People” featuring Matthew Saldivar, Micheal McKean and Ryder Bach. Sharp shutters and linear accents in the Lighting were used throughout.

The starkness of Micheal McKeans character in raw white light is juxtaposed against the lurid color of Storm Large’s stripper character in a moment from “Shame”.

The relationship of the rectangular projection surface and the sharp lighting shapes on the floor are shown in this shot of Micheal McKean in “Dixie Flyer

The music and stage direction fit Brian’s approach to Lighting the piece. A seamless integration of all of the production elements.

Xbox at E3 2010

Every year the entire gaming industry comes together for the Electronic Entertainment Expo(E3).  The one of the highlights every year for the press briefings that each of the major manufactures puts on to discuss the upcoming year for the their ecosystem of products and games.  Since 2007 Manny has been lighting all of Xbox's briefings and social events at E3.

The challenge always is how do you create a design for the show that both reflects the core Xbox brand look and feel but is flexible enough to make the individual games and product stand out when they are discussed.

The solution in 2010 was to us medium and hi resolution LED screens to create a fluid canvas.  By flanking the central projected screen with scenic creative LED screens we were able to transform the stage look and feel from the core Xbox brand looks to game specific looks with their own particular striking graphics.

Video games are by their nature a visual medium and the creative choices made by the game developers became a huge source of inspiration for the design team.   The starting place was always the game developers graphics.  We then jump off from there with specific animations, layouts and transitions to create an overall coherent and visually striking show.

The other major challenge is that the briefing is both a TV show(going out live on Spike TV) and also captured simultaneously live in the room for hundreds of international media outlets.  The lighting design needs to be dynamic and effective both on camera and to the live audience.

Disney Studio Theater

Project Description

Disney undertook a refurbishment of their scoring stage/theater to transform it into a jewel of a theater.  The new theater had to meet many programmatic missions.  It had to be a state of the art screening room, provide a venue for corporate communications, serve as the hub for company wide meetings and be the on the lot location for entertainment driven presentations.

We worked with the architectural consultants to create a space that met all of these criteria and that could be controlled in a theatrical system.  We also designed the show that plays out on the exterior of the building as well as the interior curtain show.
